North Korea backs Scottish Independence

Not sure why independence supporters and those who oppose them rely so much on that North Sea oil. Perhaps people should check on the latest yields given from those oil rigs. It's dropping. The peak has ended long ago. The UK has already reaped the rewards and has invested in other sectors to keep the economy strong. Norway has been stocking up in preparation for the decline of its oil yields, Scotland doesn't have this luxury. Even if the UK decides to give up on the entire North Sea oil reserves, it's not like all those oil rigs are suddenly the property of Scotland. The oil still will go to British households, the only thing that would change is the tax rate and the oil companies new arrangements. Scotland's economy is small and will have the power of any other small economy like Slovakia. Except without the support or the benefits of the Euro. The British subsidies will disappear, and the Pound Sterling with it.

If the Yes vote goes through I hope they enjoy their new freedoms and ability to create a new constitution, but I also hope they don't have any grand ideas of how their economy will go. They may not even get the oil anyway. The status quo with the UK in charge might be retained. We'll see what happens though.

The Union Jack will look very odd if they succeed though. I hope the "No" vote wins.

Canada had a similiar situation with Quebec. They actually wanted to succeed while keeping the Canadian Dollar. A bit much, isn't it? It costs a lot to form a new currency and build all the bureaucracy that goes with it. It hurts more than helps.

You cant compare 200 years old undisturbed scottish economy with transitional economy of Slovakia. Slovakian economy was collectivist for 50 years and before that ruined in WW2 and had crisis in WW1, while scottish economy had growth even in WW2, because it wasnt invaded or bombed, their companies and peasants could produce and sell normally. Thats why scottish GDP per capita is $50,000 while slovakian gdp per capita is $10,000. Scottish economy is strong because of continuity, thats the most important, population number doesnt matter.

Oh but I can. Obviously the past counts, but we're talking about the future here, what will happen if the Yes vote succeeds. Will it be better for the Scottish economy, or not? In my opinion, it won't be a good thing in the short term. Long term it could turn out all right, after they've repaired the damage from companies leaving the area and completely rebuilt their political system and currency. But it still won't be as good as if they stayed with the UK. Increased costs will hit the common people hard once the border goes back up after a couple centuries of it not being there.

On an international level Scotland won't matter much. I was comparing the possible power that Scotland will have to the likes of other small countries, like Slovakia. I could have said any other small fragile country. I know full well that Scotland will be secure if it succeeds from the UK. It isn't a bad choice. But if they stay under the UK and start arguing for greater freedoms, they'd have the best of both worlds.

Of course this is all speculation, but the companies announcing what will happen if Scotland succeeds speak for itself.

Canada use double standards, as they recognized Kosovo, but they doesnt let Quebec to secede. Only on this planet, in this time you will find country like Canada which boast democracy and freedom, support regions of foreign countries to secede, but oppress its own regions and doesnt let them freedom and democracy to decide their own future.

If Canada recognized Kosovo as independent and said every region should pursue separate way, and if Canada support secession of Tibet, then Canada should support Scottish and Crimean independence as well.

Hope you realize that the people of Quebec have had different referendums for their sovereignty and the people of Quebec have voted to stay a part of Canada on all occasions. Even at the federal level, the French party (Bloc Quebecois) have recently lost a huge number of seats inside Quebec itself very recently. The stance Canada has put forward is not a double standard, Canada has let Quebec decide if it wanted to stay or not multiple times. You're assuming things and talking nonsense, try to learn a few things outside of your little bubble please.

Obviously Canada will support the Scots if the Yes vote does go through. It's a valid referendum with no force or military personnel involved. I support Crimea myself, as they did vote, albeit with heavy military presence in the area, which is probably why Canada does not support it. Crimea is a different matter altogether, and is nothing like the Scotland vote. Let's refrain from bringing Crimea up in the future in this thread.

If we can even trust the elections in Crimea. You yourself said that Chechnya deserves independence. Last time I checked Chechnya is in a part of Russia so it looks to me that Russia is just trying to grab up all the land they can and say that the people want to. Did everyone in Georgia say they wanted to be a part of Russia too?

I've noticed. I just wanted to talk about the North Sea oil production and correct him on his assumptions about Canada. Pretty pointless to go further.

Reasons, profits and losses for scotlands independence

What the scots would benefit from the separation?
They will keep the profits from the export of oil, gas, steel, salmon fish and whiskey. In addition, they will join the european union in the future and choose a less conservative economic policy that matches their socialist preference

What the scots will lose from the separation?
They will lose the support and influence of british foreign policy and their current economy situation.
This move will force them to separte from british corporations that will move to work in england
The independence is expected to raise the cost of living and harm social services

What britian will lose?
It will deal with damage on its status as a superpower and will lose third of its territory and one-tenth of its residents. Britain also loses access to oil and gas resources of the scots sea area and will be forced to move its nuclear arsenal of scotland territorial area.

Why scotland seeks to separate from the UK now?
The british government didn't benefit the Scots in the last three decades, even in the years when labour was in power. The current government of david cameron is hated in scotland, and with the rise of the Scottish National Party the conditions to separate are ripe

If scotland gets its independence, is queen elizabeth will continue her reign?
Apparently yes, but it is unclear what format. Most scots have mutual respect and love to the royal family, so there is a chance that the queen will continue to reign over scotland as australia and canada

What currency scotland would use if they win independence?
They are supposed to use the british pound currency after independence - but the british government denies this altogether. If britain does prevent the use in edinburgh, scotland will have to develop a dependence on foreign currency, most likely euro.
