How to make defense lines with 3 units?

Yo, so I was most curious about this from the get go.. I see other players making defense lines with 3 units in a triangle formation around cities but for me it looks like shittt when I've tried I was curious if I need longer defense line upgrade to do this or if I'm just going about it the wrong way

To make a simple triangle wall you dont need the upgrades, but if you want to have more space (what makes it very easy to wall) you should buy the upgrade(s).
