Care to explain this more for those of us that don't understand the classing system in pokemon... all I know is from playing the DS game with friends

Pokemon Showdown is the same as playing DS games, pretty much. The only difference is that you can choose 6 of whichever pokemon you want, and give them whichever moves and abilities they could normally learn, as well as customize their AVs.

The Pokemon on the site are arranged by strength and how often they are used. In decreasing order, Uber is where nearly anything goes, OverUsed is the second strongest tier, then BorderLine, UnderUsed, RarelyUsed, and NeverUsed. For this match, you can use anything below OU—so, BL, UU, RU, and NU are all acceptable.

Here's a list of BL Pokemon: http://www.smogon.com/dex/xy/tags/bl
And here are UU Pokemon: http://www.smogon.com/dex/xy/tags/uu

You'll most likely want to create your team from these two categories, and there's rarely any reason to pick Pokemon from RU or NU, especially if you're not experienced.
